This 90 minute seminar on Policy Governance will provide a solid introduction to a clear model for Board effectiveness. Policy Governance also known as “Carver Governance” is not just a set of “tips & traps” on Board processes. More than any other model, Carver Governance delineates completely the roles of the Board and Executive Director, and each individual knows the limits of his/her domain at all times. A Carver Board governs primarily through policies. It is rare for the Executive Director to wait on the Board for a decision, and the board is focused on the future rather than the past.
Carver Governance has been characterized as “a hands off model with the staff in control.” Yet, properly implemented the Board has never been more in control and the staff are more accountable than ever. This workshop may tempt you to convert your nonprofit to this model, or it may just give you solid ideas for clarifying roles, authority and limits within the model you currently use. Whatever your response, you’ll complete this workshop knowing the difference between Policy Governance and the traditional model used by so many.
