Why Attend:

As a nonprofit board member or CEO, you are committed to the mission of the organization you serve. And, you recognize it is your responsibility to ensure the ongoing effectiveness and sustainability of this organization. On April 22, join community leaders from across the Lowcountry for an inspiring day of presentations and conversations focusing on strong board governance practices. Share your board experiences and learn from your colleagues. Walk away with new perspectives and proven processes as well as an expanded network of community relationships.


Who Should Attend:

SCANPO has designed the Board Summit for board members and their nonprofit CEOs/executive directors. Our opening session from 9-10:45 a.m. is exclusively for Board Chairs and their CEOs, who must attend together. We invite other board members to join the workshop from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.. We anticipate attendance from across the nonprofit sector.


Registration: $50 per person   

Open only to board members and CEOs/executive directors of SCANPO nonprofit member organizations. Attendance will be capped at 150. Register three attendees and bring fourth board member for free. (Use the promocode 'buy3get1' at checkout. Must register all four attendees in the same order) Registration includes lunch, breaks and the reception. For CEOs and board chairs, a light breakfast will also be offered.

About Our Speakers:

Susan Meier
Principal
Meier and Associates

Susan brings over 28 years of governance and nonprofit experience to her work. She has held senior roles both as a nonprofit executive and a leadership consultant. Her 13 years at Prevent Child Abuse America offered Susan the foundation for understanding the unique challenges of the nonprofit sector. She put this background into practice from 2004 to 2011 as the vice president of consulting and training for BoardSource, the nation's premier governance resource for nonprofit organizations.

Today, Susan works collaboratively with nonprofit executives and board leadership helping them to build a deeper understanding of board roles and responsibilities, to utilize strategic and generative thinking, to maximize their board meetings and to transform their boardroom cultures. She has extensive experience in facilitating sensitive and important conversations and in helping boards build on their strengths to become higher performing boards.

 

Jane Riley-Gambrell
CEO
Communities in Schools Charleston

Jane, a longstanding nonprofit executive, has spent her career leading an organization whose mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS of Charleston is a model program that serves nearly 12,000 students in Charleston and Berkeley counties. Jane's work is built on a foundation of strong public/private partnerships. She understands the value of these relationships. 

 

Joseph P. Riley
Former Mayor of Charleston
Endowed Chair in American Government and Public Policy for The Citadel

Joe was the beloved mayor of Charleston for 40 years, transformed the city from a decaying urban center to a top cultural destination. He is lauded for leading his community through crises such as the shooting at the Emanuel AME Church and the destruction caused by Hurricane Hugo.

As a devoted public servant, he knows what it takes to work effectively with community groups. Mayor Riley will share his perspective on how nonprofits can effectively develop collaborative relationships that will expand their capacity to serve others. 


Sherrie Snipes-Williams
CEO
Charleston Promise Neighborhood

Sherrie has 15+ years of experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, board governance, strategy advancement, performance management, planning, external communications & marketing and more! Currently, she is the CEO of Charleston Promise Neighborhood. Previously, she served in leadership roles with The Atlanta Women’s Foundation, Samaritan House, CityCares (now Points of Light Foundation), and Hands On Atlanta. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, she actively serves on local and national nonprofit boards. 

 

Mike Gibbons
Executive Director
Charleston Regional Arts Alliance

Mike Gibbons is the executive director of the Charleston Regional Alliance for the Arts. Born and raised in Aiken, SC, he now lives in Mount Pleasant. Prior to moving to the Lowcountry, Gibbons was the chief development officer for South Carolina for Golden Harvest Food Bank. He also served as the executive director for the Aiken Community Playhouse.

In a prior professional life, Gibbons spent about 15 years in newspapers and still writes a weekly newspaper humor column. In his spare time, he likes watching Alabama football, tromping around in nature, and going on adventures with his wife, Jennifer, and two kids, Allie (15) and Parker (12).

  

Lenna McDonald
Board Chairman
Charleston Regional Arts Alliance

Angel / seed round investor for innovative start-up companies.  Advisor, board member and senior leader for portfolio companies, private companies, charitable and community organizations.  Public company executive and General Counsel with proven track record solving complex business challenges.

Leader with demonstrated competencies in corporate governance, business strategy planning and execution, board practices, compliance, securities regulatory compliance, contractual matters and corporate development.  Executive committee member and advisor to company and non-profit boards. 

Key leader in successful public company turnaround after an organizational and financial crisis.  Risk taker who spearheaded a successful international expansion and formation of a joint venture able to win, within one year, a major competitive $200 million contract.

 

Ted Legasey
Board Chair
Charleston Promise Neighborhood

Ted is the board chair of the Charleston Promise Neighborhood and a member of the boards of the USAFA Endowment, the Trident United Way (TUW) and the Tri-County Cradle-to-Career Collaborative (TCCC). He is also a member of the TCCC Executive Committee. Ted was a founding member of SVP Charleston, which is a social venture philanthropy organization, and a founder of Book Buddies, which is the predecessor organization of Reading Partners Charleston.

Ted’s passion is helping to bring about fundamental improvement in the public education of children from lower income households, and he is co-chairing the Movement for Effective Schools for All Charleston Children.
