We all want our development programming to support more “sustainable” operations for our organizations, but what does that mean in practical terms? This topic is designed to help participants take a deeper look at what they do in their daily work as development professionals, and consider fresh thinking on how to do it better. Key to working “smarter, not harder” is efficiency and sustainability. Sharpen your tools to build a development program that really works, do what you do better, and make it more meaningful. Begin by building an understanding the value of philanthropy (and how this is different from fundraising); hammer out skillsets to better balance the art or relationship-building with the science of metrics in fund development; and dig into hands-on methods of sharing the development workload while increasing personal and professional characteristics that boost your organization’s appeal for board and staff.

Clare Jordan’s role at Capital Development Services is to keep in touch with what is happening in nonprofits of all types all around the Southeast. Clare enjoys traveling the region, and presents at numerous conferences, sharing expertise in teaching philanthropic engagement.

Having held positions in nonprofit management since the early 1990s, Clare brings both professional and volunteer experience to her work. Her introduction to the nonprofit sector began when she founded the Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity at North Carolina State University, still a thriving organization. Her first fundraising job was as the first Director of Development for Appalachian State University’s Belk Library. She has since worked in marketing and development roles with several nonprofits, and provided consulting services to elevate the work of nonprofits around North Carolina.

A Winston-Salem native, Clare is a graduate of N.C. State University and is an avid volunteer, including board service, such as Founder and Chair of BRAVO! for the UNC School of the Arts; board member for N.C. State University’s Nonprofit Institute; Co-Chair of Sally's Angels; and service on local boards including Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, Crisis Control Ministries, YMCA Camp Hanes, AFP Triad Chapter, Westwood Club, the Vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and as an ordained Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Hickory, NC. Clare was named to theTriad Business Journal’s “40 Leaders Under 40” in 2008.
